About the Yank

Who is The Yank?

That’s me…in Vilamoura, Portugal

Hiya, I’m Becky!  I’m originally from western Pennsylvania, but after graduating from college, I lived in Indiana and Washington state. In the fall of 2011, I moved to England to begin a new chapter and fulfill two of my life goals of living abroad again and getting my Masters degree. I completed my dissertation in September 2012 and graduated in December 2012.

Why Yorkshire?

I’d be kidding you if I acted like I randomly chose Yorkshire as the English region where I would live and study. So, what really drew me here? This American girl met a really amazing British guy, who swept me off my feet in 2010. Yep, we should probably have a movie made after us…oh wait, that’s already been done. 😉

After many months of a long-distance relationship, we’ve settled into life together in West Yorkshire.

In December 2011, he surprised me with a proposal in Paris!

And just over a year later, in December 2012, we made it official with a wedding in the Dominican Republic with our closest family and friends!

And a year after our wedding, in December 2013, we welcomed our beautiful daughter into our life.

Needless to say, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but we couldn’t imagine it any other way.

That’s us…at a wedding in London.

  1. Hey look, I found your blog! You better keep this thing updated missy, we all know how our first turn at blogging turned out… 😉

Hope you made it safely and hope to be seeing you over there sometime in the future! XO

    • Yay, you found me! I promise to keep this updated. I already have lots of ideas on what to write about and I can’t wait to share! Hope you guys make it over here! We’ll go to tea and be posh and fabulous together! 😉

  2. Hey hun, I’m a fellow American also raised in Pennsylvania and living in the North West (Manchester) 🙂 I’ve been here since 2001 so I’m almost completely Anglophiled at this point (the accent still totally gives me away) but I just wanted to say hello and welcome!!! There are some brilliant things as well as some erm… ‘challenges’ to being an expat in this country so if there’s anything you need or even if you just wanna moan, please just stop by and say hello! 🙂 xxx

  3. I’m looking to go to college overseas in Yorkshire. I have been searching to go to school there because I am a huge fan of the Bronte sisters, and, since I want to be a writer, I think Yorkshire’s beautiful scenery and fresh air will serve to give me inspiration. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Hannah,

Thanks so much for the comment! I’m sorry for the delay in responding. I would recommend you look into University of Leeds or the University of York. I’d be more than happy to speak to you more about this if you would like to email me at yankinyorkshire@gmail.com. I promise not to take over a month to reply! 🙂

  4. Dear Becky,

My name is Joyce and I work for ExpatFinder.com.
ExpatFinder.com is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in England, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

    Best regards,

I'd love to hear what you think, too! x
