{Little Things} Finding a Hair Stylist

For the past month or so, I’ve been utterly annoyed with my hair. I realize that a solution is rather easy in that if I don’t like it then I should just have it cut. Easy for you to say.

For me, finding a new hair stylist sends me into a mild state of panic. This task to me is worse than finding a new doctor or dentist when I move. (Although when I came to England and had to visit the doctor for the first time, I was assigned to one which made the process much easier on me.)

I had the same hair stylist from age 11 until I got my first job after finishing college (university). That means that even when I was in college I would make special trips home (about a 2.5 hour drive) to have my hair cut.

When I lived in Indianapolis, I never really found someone I was excited about, so I hopped around salons without ever being truly happy with my hair cuts. However, when I moved to Washington, I found my stylist. She is awesome. And, I’m really thankful that not only does she work wonders with my hair, but she is a fabulous friend. She would sometimes meet me late on Monday evenings since I had a fairly long commute to and from work. I remember one night in particular when I was going through a terribly rough patch and she just sat and talked to me while my head was covered in foils. Thankfully, this lovely lady is also coming along to our wedding and has offered to do my hair, which makes me feel ever so grateful for the great friendship we have formed.

I moved back to PA and I found someone I trusted again. Lucky for me, we’ve been back to the U.S. enough times since September that she has been able to cut and color my hair on a regular basis. At this point, it had been since March when I last had my hair cut and there is no sight of returning to the U.S. until next year at some point.

I had to bite the bullet. And yesterday, I had my first ever hair cut in England. This is monumental. Even when I told my mom, she couldn’t actually believe I finally caved. I’ve yet to style it myself, but so far I’m happy with it. I had about an inch taken off (although why does it seem infinitely more than that?!) and he trimmed up my bangs (fringe in the UK) so they aren’t always annoyingly in my eyes.

So, I hate to jinx it, but I think I found my hair stylist. And, you don’t know how relieved I am!

  1. I’ve not really ever gone to a stylist (only had my hair cut professionally three times- curly hair is VERY forgiving!), but the worst one was here. The cut AND color. I had to go back the next week to have my two-tone hair fixed, and ended up chopping all my hair off to my chin at home a month later when it started looking like street urchin hair! I hope yours is the first of a long, happy relationship!!
